Roughly 50 automobiles have been covered with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's town of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were marked, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they reported in a release.
Law enforcement say they were contacted during the night on Wednesday, when a man observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored liquid.
The fluid had been drawn in the pattern of a banned symbol, they stated.
Officers then located multiple other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement report initial examinations show the substance was probably blood from a person.
"Currently there is no indication as to its origin; officials are presently not aware of any physical harm in relation with the event," they added.
Municipal representatives said they were working "to unravel the case" and have appealed to the residents for tips.
An important political figure commented the incident left him speechless and had to be resolved quickly.
"This act affects the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he stated on a platform, recalling the death of nine people by a shooter aiming at residents of foreign heritage in five years prior.
