Britain and America have established a key bilateral deal that will preserve no levies on British drug products entering the American market.

The Terms of the Accord

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has pledged to increase spending on drugs through the National Health Service (NHS). This pledge ensures that duties on these vital products will remain at nothing for a period of three years.

This development follows earlier warnings to hike duties on branded drug imports, with increases floated as high as double the cost.

"This arrangement with the UK bolsters the worldwide climate for innovative medicines and establishes long-overdue balance to transatlantic pharmaceutical trade," a statement declared.

Trade Impact

Medicines constitute one of the the United Kingdom's largest export categories to the US, which is by far the primary destination for major companies like GSK and AstraZeneca.

Statistics indicate that in the 12 months to the end of September, the UK exported pharmaceutical products worth over eleven billion pounds to the US. This figure accounted for a significant portion of total UK exports in that span.

"This deal protects jobs, stimulates funding and sets the stage for the UK to emerge as a global hub for life sciences," the Business and Trade Secretary remarked.

Detailed British Pledges

The agreement involves several notable commitments from the United Kingdom:

  • Higher Cost Ceiling: The UK will lift the affordability limit at which it deems new therapies to be unaffordable by 25%.
  • Boosted Medicine Funding: There is a aim to double total NHS spending on treatments from 0.3% of Gross Domestic Product to 0.6 percent over the next decade.
  • Payback Limit: The percentage manufacturers must return to the NHS to prevent overspending will be capped at fifteen percent. Last year, refunds topped 20%.

Recent Tensions

The pact takes place against a long-running dispute between the pharmaceutical industry and the British authorities over spending levels and approval rates.

These tensions were heightened by arguments that US customers were charged a premium for the same drugs than people in the UK and Europe.

Recently, several significant pharmaceutical investments in the UK have been delayed or cancelled, while substantial funding commitments have been pledged toward projects in the United States.

The Science Minister acknowledged that the NHS had to spend more on treatments, noting that its expenditure on drugs had shrunk as a share of its resources over the past decade.
