This move by the Democratic National Committee to block the release of its internal autopsy report on the last presidential race appears remarkable yet entirely predictable. Opposed to hard truths, the DNC often functions more like a PR firm rather than a political organization focused on building local power for winning elections.
A Culture Resistant to Internal Critique
Hesitant to depart from the prevailing attitude of conformity, the committee has stayed under the Biden-Harris shadow throughout 2025. Releasing an official autopsy would have indicated whether the leadership truly desire to promote open debate about the strategic failures that enabled Donald Trump to win re-election. Yet, the leadership is moving forward under the pretense that there is little to understand from the stunning loss from the last cycle.
Our guiding principle: will this lead to victory? Should the answer be negative, it becomes a sideline issue from our fundamental goal," a rationale which was presented to justify concealing the analysis.
Major Failures an Autopsy Would Have Addressed
A genuine analysis worth its salt would not dodge key points of failure. Among them are:
- Electoral Alienation: The loss of millions of voters who supported the Democratic ticket during the previous election was decisive during the tight recent race.
- The Choice to Run: The determined choice of a party leader to stay in the race, and an extremely delayed exit, is viewed as robbing Democratic voters of a genuine choice.
- Failing the Working-Class Base: While facing inflation, the campaign is criticized for bowing to elite contributors without successfully attempting to address the role of big business.
- The Gaza Effect: The failure to adjust a policy position on the situation in Gaza is cited as alienating key demographic groups, especially among youth voters, Arab-Americans, and Muslim Americans.
- Losing Young Voter Backing: Polling data demonstrates a huge drop-off in support for the party from voters aged 18-29.
A Pattern Avoiding Accountability
The decision to withhold fits a longstanding habit of sidestepping hard truths. It echoes a situation in which the vast majority of Democratic officeholder in Congress went along with a sitting president's decision for seeking another term right up until a catastrophic campaign event compelled an exit.
Meanwhile, a significant majority of Democratic voters had been consistently telling surveyors that they did not want the incumbent to run again.
Financial Concerns
An honest analysis could investigate matters about campaign spending, including how much money went to party strategists as well as advertising contractors over the course of a campaign that burned through an enormous amount over a few months.
A Larger Issue
At its core, the blockage regarding the analysis points to a deference toward the existing power structure who engineered a disastrous national race. The signal for ordinary supporters – including countless small donors – is that they cannot have a right to understand the lessons party chiefs say they discovered from a report drawing from conversations with insiders.
A political entity unable to publicly examine its mistakes will struggle to break free from the cycle which was so beneficial to their opponents.
