The Legendary Anime Concludes a 27-Year Tradition in 2026

It's the end of an iconic period for long-running series, with Toei Animation revealing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and featured numerous filler arcs. Commencing in January, once the current storyline concludes, the anime will take a quarterly hiatus until spring, when the Elbaph arc begins.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, the series will produce two seasons every annually for a cap of 26 episodes. The studio states this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the universe — incorporating more material, rhythm, and pacing of the original manga.” However, producers end by promising “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which means more related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime previously took a six-month break that started in late 2024 and ended in April 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to enhance the animation quality and allow the manga to build a lead to avoid a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The show greatly benefited from this break, and it has managed to supply fans with countless action sequences, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.

Adopting Modern Trends

While a few summary installments appeared during this season, the benefits of this updated approach far surpass the odd pause in the story. This also gives the manga, which is currently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the announcement, this may result in one episode of the series covering one chapter, with others alternatively covering one and a half chapters or additional to compensate for time.

It's the end of a generation for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the last big series to ditch the traditional method of production, which prioritized airing for almost the entire year. This explains why iconic series such as Bleach, and of course One Piece have so many filler arcs, and the standard of the art can change drastically between one episode and the next. Today, series creation is structured in seasons, with one or two maximum coming out each annually, enabling better quality and greater accuracy to the source material.
