Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and given more than a 27-year term in jail, but he was staying under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.

This encompassed attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a public vigil that could enable a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the custody, the judge said information from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the surveillance device to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a senator, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Will you battle for your country, or see it all from your phone there on your sofa? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the chance of Bolsonaro's move to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a background of planning to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The court filing emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is located around 13km from his dwelling.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist American leader President Trump, leading him to enact a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.

The former president is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will experience a detention review on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that the former president be authorized to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he required ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

He was determined responsible of orchestrating a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the national vote to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to kill Lula and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it didn't receive the endorsement of the armed forces officials. His successor was sworn in without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, numerous his followers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the national capital, the capital city.

The police intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, restore order and return him to office.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also banned from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
